A NAS device with the right built-in features can make your data accessible at a distance without having to have another computer running at home. We have previously looked at such as Netgear Large or Myditto. Freecom Silver Store 2 works in much the same way as Netgear Large.

You give your device a unique name, such as “my-nas”, and then register it with an online service. Your NAS device will receive the URL address my-nas.freecomnas.com, and you can access it anywhere via a browser. You can also reach it via an app on the Android or IOS. So you can look at a picture or listen to music stored on your NAS drive via your phone when you are sitting on the bus. Seamlessly.

In fact, it actually works flawlessly. We linked up via both web browser from a laptop and via Android app. Both methods were easy to get started and worked fine. Of course, it can be tough if you have a slow connection, but it can not affect the Silver Store.

Expected performance

We test drove with copying from a fast solid state disk into your computer via a gigabit network. When we copied a few large files to Silver Store 2, we came up in about 45 megabytes / second which is very good. When we copied a folder of 40 large files totaling 1.5 gigabytes low speed average at 34 megabytes / second. When we copied a folder of 1.7 gigabytes, but where the content consists of more than 7000 files of varying sizes scattered in more than 400 subfolders, then gradually slowed copying in and average speed was ultimately fairly modest 7.5 megabytes / second.

This is normal for the NAS and in terms of its price level is Silver Store 2 really fast. It is also energy efficient, despite two hard drives draw the modest 15 watts during normal operation.

Silver Store 2 is easy to get started, you get a clear printed getting started guide on how to physically connect the device on the network. On the accompanying CD-ROM, you have a program to help you find the device on the network. When you first connect to the Silver Store 2 may go through a short setup wizard, and then the unit is ready to use.
